How to Choose the Right Capacitor for Your Appliance
Capacitors are small but critical components used in motors and HVAC systems.
Choosing the wrong one can cause:
- motor failure
- overheating
- equipment not starting
What to Look For:
Every capacitor has key ratings printed on it:
- Microfarads (MFD or µF) → must match exactly
- Voltage (VAC) → can be equal or higher, never lower
Example:
- 40/5 MFD 440V
- The 40 and 5 must match exactly
Common Mistakes:
❌ Using the wrong MFD rating
❌ Guessing based on size
❌ Replacing with “close enough”
Pro Tip:
Take a picture of your old capacitor before coming in — it makes matching much faster.
When in Doubt:
Capacitors are one of the easiest parts to replace — if you get the right one.
