Why Your Washer Is Not Draining

If your washer finishes the cycle but leaves water in the tub, one of the most common causes is a drain problem.

Here are the most likely reasons:

1. Bad Washer Drain Pump

The drain pump is what pushes the water out of the washer.

If it goes bad, your washer may:

  • stop with water inside
  • make a humming noise
  • drain very slowly
  • not drain at all

In many cases, a bad pump is one of the most common reasons a washer will not drain.

2. Clogged Drain Pump

Sometimes the pump is still good, but something is blocking it.

Common things found inside washer pumps:

  • coins
  • lint
  • socks
  • debris
  • small clothing items

If something is stuck in the pump, the washer may not be able to push the water out correctly.

3. Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose

The drain hose carries the water from the washer to the household drain.

If the hose is:

  • kinked
  • crushed
  • clogged

the washer may not drain properly.

A simple hose blockage can sometimes look like a much bigger problem.

4. Lid Switch or Door Lock Problem

On many washers, the machine will not go into drain or spin if the lid switch or door lock is bad.

If your washer:

  • fills
  • washes
  • stops before spin
  • leaves water inside

then the lid switch or door lock may need to be checked.

5. Control Board or Timer Issue

If the washer pump, hose, and lid switch all seem fine, the issue could be with the control board or timer not sending power to the drain system.

This is less common than a bad pump or clogged hose, but it does happen.

Quick Things to Check First

Before replacing parts, check these basics:

  • Make sure the washer is unplugged
  • Look for a kinked drain hose
  • Check for clogs in the drain hose
  • Inspect the drain pump for debris
  • Listen for a humming sound when the washer should be draining

If the pump hums but does not move water, it may be jammed or failing.

If the pump is completely silent, it may not be getting power or it may have failed.

What Part Usually Fixes It?

In many cases, the washer drain pump is the part that needs to be replaced.

Drain pumps are common wear parts and can fail over time.

Not all washers use the same pump, so the best way to find the correct one is by using your model number.
